1 Life, 5 Gifts
Read the paper today, a segment which really caught my attention. Last thursday night, doctors certified a 21-year-old as brain dead. Hours later, his organs (heart, lung, two kidneys and liver) were transplated into five recipients, giving them a new lease on life.
No. 1 : HEART
To student Muhammad Fikri, 15, who has been using a mechanical heart for six months
No. 2 : LUNG
To 55-year-old man diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis since 1999. By yesterday, patient starts to breathe on his own.
No. 3 & 4 : KIDNEYS
To a 35-year-old man whose donor organ was rejected and has been on dialysis for 12 years. To a patient in the 20s who has been on dialysis for eight years. Both recipients are doing well.
No. 5 : LIVER
To a six-year-old boy. Patient doing well.
And not to forget, these historic multi-organ transplants involving the heart, a lung, liver and two kidneys from a single donor was carried out simultaneously at IJN, Hospital Selayang and HKL. Though the multiple-organ transfer was not the first, it involved the removal of an artificial heart and insertion of a real heart, as well as the transplant of a lung. Walla, welcome to the wonderful world of medical; ... with god's consent, that is! May god bless the donor, whoever he may be. Al-Fatihah.
